Some News for you!
from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
Dear ECODIM Alumni,
I hope this message finds you well.
As ECODIM, we would like to share some information that will surely be of interest to you, which is being generated by the GMF, in order to create networks among the students of your three symbiosis courses. I’m sharing the invitation with you below.
Dear ECODIM Alumni,
Hoping you are doing well.
My name is Ana Teles, and I am happy to introduce myself as the Project Manager dedicated to promote the PhD Summer School on Host-Microbe Symbioses, which happens biannually in Oeiras, Portugal. This initiative is funded by a Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation grant, lead by Karina Xavier and Luís Teixeira.
In line with the goals of the Moore Foundation, we are also organizing an online joint meeting, together with participants from the three international Summer Schools on Symbiosis: PhD Summer School on Host-Microbe Symbioses (Portugal), the ECODIM (Chile) and the international summer school in Molecular and Cell Biology of Symbiosis (Massachusetts, USA). We believe that this meeting, to be held next month, on the 20th November will be a fantastic opportunity to build and enhance our alumni network for everyone’s benefit.
In order to build up the Symbiosis Courses Alumni Network, we are now contacting the former students of the three Summer Schools, and asking them to fill a form with some questions. In this way, we could gather their contact information and interests, so you can get the most of this network. As a first step, we kindly ask you to fill out this form:
Thank you for your time and support. We look forward to your participation and to making our alumni network a resourceful community.
Best regards,
Ana Teles
Kindle Regards,

ECODIM 2016 has been the most enriching academic experience that I’ve ever had during my career until today. It gave me some new perspectives about the things I was doing and the way I wanted to drive my research since then. The academic quality in terms of lecturers, laboratory equipments, supplies and resources exceeded all my expectations. Professors over there did not put a limit to our research goals and outlooks, and I think that is very important in a context of doing and promoting science. ECODIM is a great way to empower young scientists to pursue their research goals and ambitions.

Besides offering an excellent theoretical and practical experience, the network that I made during my course remains really tight. All classmates are always writing to each other regarding interesting conferences, Postdoc opportunities and other PhD/science related matters. I personally collaborate in various scientific projects and have been working as a Postdoc in the laboratory of professors I met during the ECODIM summer course. Also, the amazing opportunity to talk about science and life with the instructors of the course, gives you a completely new perspective about your career. Specifically, after ECODIM 2012 I was able to do a PhD internship at UC San Diego, USA; and then have been working as a Postdoc at the University of Concepcion (since 2013) with a Professor I met at the same course.

Dealing with every aspect of a research project is a complicated endeavor, given that thematics are very specific. I work with inorganic species of sulphur such as hydrogen sulphur, AVS and CRS in intersticial water and in diagenetic marine sediment and also in the non-stationary processes that happen in these environments which are related with the activity of chemolithotrophic and chemolithoautotroph microorganisms. ECODIM provided me with a very valuable tool to consider and incorporate in my future research.
